To become a certified contractor in New York, depending on the trade you are interested in, you may be required to pass a trade exam and Business, Law and Management. Use our Information Request Form to find out more.

Construction Work Regulated:

State regulations do not exist for public or private construction work, except for asbestos handling. Contact the City, County you wish to work.

License Requirements

Asbestos Contractors:

  • Applicants must submit evidence of workers compensation insurance, disability insurance and the name of the "designated supervisor" holding a current Asbestos Supervisor Certificate.
  • There were 1,000 licensees as of October 1994.


  • The New York comptroller may require a payment bond before the approval of a public works contract.

Reciprocal Agreements

New York does not have reciprocity agreements with any other states.
