P = amount earned by plumber
A = amount earned by assistant

If the plumber makes $32 per hour and he worked two hours more than his assistant, then 2(32) = $64

P = A + 64
P + A = 314

Now replace the P in the second equation with the first equation, like so
(A + 64) + A = 314
which can be rewritten as
2A + 64 = 314
subtract 64 from both sides of the equation
2A = 250
divide by 2 on both sides of the equation
A = $125 <==== that's how much the assistant earned

Now use that $ amount in either or both of the original two equations to find P
P = (125) + 64
P =
